Riverside Garden

Design brief: A large garden, which was designed for an active family with two children. Two modern and sleek seating areas were included- one for 12 people to dine and an intimate space adjacent to kitchen. Deep herbaceous borders were also proposed to attract wildlife and provide seasonal interest.

An informal and contemporary garden with wildlife friendly planting. A diverse range of habitats were created, including ‘herbaceous’, ‘gravel’ and ‘bog’ sections of the garden - providing different niches for wildlife.

The planting scheme was naturalistic, using plants with a loose habit, that required minimal pruning or aftercare. Several new multi-stem trees with raised canopies provided structural interest and continuity throughout the garden. While a variety of easy care shrubs were repeated throughout the borders to hold the seating areas and provide structure throughout the year, such as Pittosporum tenuifolium 'Golf Ball', Cornus sericea 'Flaviramea', and Carpinus betulus hedging. Seasonal interest was provided by a range of permeant plants, for example, Echinacea purpurea ‘‘Rubinglow’, Geranium ‘Rozanne’, Foeniculum vulgare, Salvia nemorosa 'Caradonna', Iris sibirica 'Blue King', Lythrum virgatum 'Dropmore Purple', Eryngium bourgatii, Thalictrum 'Elin', Verbena rigida, Calamagrostis x acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' and various other grasses to create dynamic movement in the wind. A selection of roses and climbers were used to envelop and soften the new pergola, archways and trellis fencing.
